In Strasbourg and Paris (see below)Setting out to be a teacher, Torgny Lindgren (born June 16th, 1938) finally decided to devote his life to literature.
Known for his political activism, he is above all a respected novelist whose work is characterized by the presence of concerns for nature and religion.
Sometimes his novels contain analyses of social injustices, as in The Way of a Serpent (published in French as Le Chemin du Serpent, Actes sud, 1982). This novel tells the story of a farmer family's exploitation by a new landowner obsessed by productivity.
In Doré's Bible (La Bible de Gustave Doré, French translation by Lena Grumbach and Catherine Marcus, Actes sud, 2008,), Lindgren outlines the out of the ordinary destiny of an illiterate character whose life is modelled on the bible of the famous illustrator. By exploring the forms sacredness on the verges of fiction, the writer brings ancient myths to life in order to create tales with a human appeal and which are above all universal.
