Under the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the defence attaché at the French embassy in Nairobi organised a seminar on peace and security in East Africa on Thursday 9 October 2008 in partnership with the Institute of Security Studies (ISS) and the French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA).
The aims of the seminar were to:

- Review the African organisations working to build a secure architecture in the sub-region and the European initiatives in support of the African Union;
- Deepen dialogue among the Kenyan military and civilian authorities, accredited diplomatic representations in Kenya and the defence attachés, representatives of the principal international organisations and NGOs, the University of Nairobi and research centres and think tanks.
More than 60 participants attended the debates held at the Résidence de France and chaired by Ambassador Elisabeth Barbier. François Grignon, Director of the International Crisis Group's Africa Program began by giving a comprehensive assessment of the current security and geopolitical situation in the sub-region.
A written summary based on the seminar will be prepared by the Hekima Institute of Peace Studies and International Relations (HIPSIR) in Nairobi.
