The European Union on the International Scene: What means for what goals?

Franco-Finnish debate on the tools and objectives of the European Union on the international stage.
The French Embassy in Finland and the European Union research programme of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (UPI) organized a debate on "The European Union on the International Scene: What means for what goals?"
The debate, organized under the aegis of the French Presidency of the Council of the EU, tackled a wide range of themes, such as:
- "European security and defence policy: does Europe have the means to achieve its goals?
- The effects of the enlargement: is an enlarged EU more influential in its neighbourhood and in the wider world?
- The European Union, the USA and China: cooperation, confrontation or competition?"
- The European Union in the face of the financial crisis: what answers can be given at European level?

- Professor Philippe Herzog, Confrontations Europe
- Dr Tommi Koivula, Finnish National Defence University
- Professor Liisa Laakso, University of Helsinki
The debate, presented by Ms Hanna Ojanen, Programme Director of the European Union research programme of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (UPI), was moderated by Mr Erkki Toivanen, former foreign correspondent of the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE).
