Several venues in Lorient (see below)Colum McCann was born in the Dublin suburbs in 1965. He left for the United States when he was 19 years old and now lives in New York.
He tells of this experience in the US in Sisters, his first narrative, (Hennessy Prize for Irish Literature and the New Writer of the Year in 1992). Though he has read Beckett, Joyce and Yeats, his true literary roots are American.
He is the author of such novels as Songdogs, This Side of Brightness, Dancer (retracing Nureev's steps), Zoli, and two short story collections, Fishing the Sloe-Black River which was awarded the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature in 1994 and Everything in This Country Must, a collection of short fiction deeply rooted in the troubled waters of resistance in Northern Ireland and set in Galway and Derry. Belfond and Editions 10/18 publish all his works in French.
