The EU-India Summit will mark a new phase in the EU's enhanced relations with this major emerging country.

The EU-India Summit will be held in Marseille on 29 September. The Indian delegation will be led by the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. The EU will be represented by the President of the French Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy, in his role as the President of the Council of the European Union, José Manuel Durão Barroso, the President of the European Commission, and Javier Solana, the High Representative for the Common and Foreign Security Policy.

This summit should constitute a new phase in EU-India relations and facilitate discussion on regional issues of mutual interest to the EU and India and on major global challenges such as the climate, energy and the world food situation.

The summit should lead to the adoption of a revised joint action plan to adapt the strategic partnership established in 2004 to new common concerns.

The summit will also be the occasion to give fresh impetus to negotiations started in 2007 with a view to concluding a maritime agreement and a free-trade agreement with India. The EU is India's primary commercial trading partner and a major investor in several sectors essential to the pursuit of Indian growth (energy, transport, and telecommunications). This agreement will stimulate trade between the EU and India, which has been growing continuously since 2002. The summit will also review negotiations aimed at reaching a horizontal aviation agreement.
