The European agriculture and fisheries ministers are meeting on 28 November in Brussels to discuss the follow-up to the informal meeting on the future of the common agricultural policy after 2013 and solidarity and openness in agriculture.

Michel Barnier, the French Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries and current president of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council, announced at the end of the Council on 27 and 28 October last that he would bring his European counterparts together in Brussels on 28 November 2008 for a council on solidarity and openness in agriculture. This meeting will be an opportunity to elaborate on the discussions on the future of the common agricultural policy after 2013 started at the informal meeting in Annecy in September.

Also on the agenda is the proposal amending the European Programme of Aid to the Poorest (PEAD). The aim of this amendment is, because of the decrease in intervention stocks, to increase the range of products that can be provided and to facilitate the buying of foodstuffs on the market. The ministers are also scheduled to have lunch with Louis Michel, the European Commissioner for development and humanitarian aid, to discuss agriculture’s contribution to development, particularly in the areas most affected by the food crisis.
