In the first week, numerous speakers insisted that fighting climate change must remain the main priority at national and international level, despite the financial crisis.

The majority of participants want the Poznań conference to give a fresh political boost to climate negotiations with a view to reaching an agreement in Copenhagen in December 2009.

To date, the delegations have focused on establishing a solid programme for 2009 and progressing on as many technical issues as possible. The results remain limited at this stage, which is normal midway throughout climate conferences. It is important to note that several points currently under discussion were until recently taboo for certain parties. The statement on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, adopted at the Environment Council on 4 December in Brussels, was greeted with a great deal of interest by a large number of delegations.

The ministerial round table scheduled for the afternoon of Thursday 11 December should allow progress to be made on the adoption of a shared view with regard to a new global agreement on the climate. It is possible that a certain number of other points will be the subject of new discussions during this high-level session, unless the parties reach an agreement in the meantime.
