The Court of Auditors, set up in 1975 and based in Luxembourg, is the EU institution responsible for auditing Community finances. In its capacity as external auditor of the European Union, the Court helps improve the EU's financial management and is the independent guardian of the financial interests of European citizens. The Court of Auditors consists of one member from each EU Member State.
The Court provides auditing services for checking the collection and spending of EU funds. It examines whether financial operations have been properly recorded and presented, and legally and regularly executed and managed in order to ensure economy, efficiency and effectiveness. The Court's findings are given in public audit reports. The Court also gives opinions on issues of financial management.
The Court of Auditors encourages transparency and assists the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union in monitoring implementation of the EU's budget.
