Cultural diversity is vital, in the same way as organic or environmental diversity. However, it faces numerous threats: standardization of content, concentration of companies, changes to the value chain to the detriment of independent designers and producers. Independent cultural companies are tackling these phenomena with their diversity, inventiveness and quest for innovation. They are resisting and preparing for another possible development in production and distribution of cultural products.
Christine Albanel, French minister of culture and communication, took the initiative of launching the "Arènes européennes de l'indépendance, les PME culturelles en Europe" ("European independence arenas: small cultural enterprises in Europe"), an event designed to champion and promote the work of independent professionals from the music, books and cinema sectors.
The "European independence arenas: small cultural enterprises in Europe" will take place on October 23th and 24th, 2008, in Paris, at the French national natural history museum. Debates, round tables, conferences and concerts will unite several hundred European cultural players - authors, composers, performers, producers, broadcasters, operators, owner-managers, etc. These two days will enable self-employed workers, firstly to share and present their best practice and secondly to formulate concrete proposals for European states and community institutions to recognize and consolidate their role as drivers of cultural diversity.
The "European independence arenas: small cultural enterprises in Europe" are a project initiated by the French minister of culture and communication and implemented by Culturesfrance and Impala (the European association of independent music labels).
