The festival's aim is to present the most significant works of the 20th century, rich in musical creations…while highlighting the new generation of artists, composers and performers.
In 2008, Musica is celebrating twenty five years of production in Alsace. Karheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007) and Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) are two of the figureheads.
Wolfgang Mitterer (1958), Pascal Dusapin (1955), Gyorgy Kurtag (1926), Heiner Goebbels (1952) and Stefano Gervasoni (1962) speak and sing to us with words borrowed from Marlowe, Monteverdi, Kafka, T.S. Eliot, Blanchot, Beckett, Camoes as well as those of the fado where the knowledgeable dispute the passions and rumours of the world; its violence as well as its melancholic nostalgia.
The works of these seven composers consitute the backbone of a rich event with close links and a wide overview where the programe, from its great orchestral battles ("Gruppen", "La Transfiguration") to an original series of organ concerts, combines benchmark performances with the most youthful of vitalities.
So, in 2008 Musica continues with its European beliefs and commitment, its groundwork for young production and its loyalty to now recognised composers while highlighting the ambitious maturity of a living French school. The creations of Hugues Dufourt, Jacques Lenot, Christophe Bertrand, Bruno Mantovani and Pascal Dusapin are proof of its diversity.
Notably, the programme features:
• "Gruppen", "Vertigo", "Extenso" by the Liège Wallonia Philharmonic Orchestra/Brussels (Pascal Rophé)
• Olivier Messiaen, by the Radio Filarmonisch Orkest & Groot OmroepKoor
• "Massacre", by Wolfgang Mitterer, by Ludovic Lagarde
