The Lyon Dance Biennial, one of the world’s leading choreographic events is celebrating its 25th anniversary and organising its 2008 Biennial as a record of the transformations this art has experienced over the last quarter of a century. This 13th Biennial is anticipating 54 pieces, presented by 42 companies from 19 countries including 15 world premiers, 6 of which are “recreations” of major contemporary works.
Among the artists invited, the majority are from Europe.
Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, the Flemish choreographer, explores the scores of Debussy, Stravinsky and Benjamin with her Cie Rosas and composes a collection of six short, brilliant pieces in “D’un soir un jour”.
The English choreographer Wayne McGregor, fascinated by a world of sciences and the concept of the technological body, presents his piece “Entity”.
Since 1992, in Brussels where she now lives, the Spaniard Olga de Soto has been developing a choreographic research work. “Histoire(s)” is a dance show and video-performance documentary, presenting a 50 year flashback on the ballet of Jean Cocteau at the Champs Elysées Theatre.
Susanne Linke grew up in Berlin and spent over twenty years in Essen before settling in Brême in 1994. Through her art she brings together both her origins drawn from the historical tradition of German dance and the development of dance theatre in modern-day Germany. In her piece “Schritte Verfolgen II”, Linke returns to her childhood: up until she was six, an illness prevented her from hearing and speaking and she could express herself only through movement and dance.
The Italian Matteo Levaggi and the Balletto Teatro di Torino offer a performance of “Primo toccare” as a subtle tribute to the masters of the past through modern dance.
“Les petites pièces de Berlin” a piece for 10 dancers performed by the Ballet de Lorraine has been recreated for the Biennial.
Also not to be forgotten: the most well-known Finnish choreographer on the international stage, Tero Saarinen and one of the greatest dancers in the new Flamenco production, Rafaela Carrasco.
Another allusion to Europe: “Agwa” by Mourad Merzouki is an exceptional encounter between ten young hip-hop dancers featuring unexpected music with a central European style.
Finally, the closing evening will be illuminated by the presence of Mariza, a singer revisiting the poetic melancholy of Fado, between tradition and modernity.
