Ruth, a young religious and single Jewish woman, returns home to London after three years in a religious college in Israel, to care for her dying mother. In order to respect her mother's last wishes, she tries her best to reunite her brother David with the family. He has cut himself off after a bitter argument, completely abandoned his religion and lectures English at a university. After numerous quarrels and provocation from Ruth, David agrees to return home under conditions which will prove painful for them both.
