King Arthur: a legend in the making
agenda
15th July 2008 to 4th January 2009Practical
Champs libres of Rennes, 10 cours des AlliésBeyond the historical narative, this exhibition combines old sources and modern adaptations to evoke the birth and future of a legend and the universality of the myth. Organised over 1,000m2, three temporary exhibition rooms over two levels, the Champs Libres presents over 200 works related to the adventures of the King and his knights. Many historical and iconic documents (precious manuscripts and books, paintings, artifacts, film posters…) illustrate the cultural influence of the Arthurian legends. Among them features a treasure kept by the Rennes Metropole Library: one of the oldest illuminated manuscripts of the Round Table novels. The first joint project by the three organisations of the Champs Libres, the Museum of Brittany and the Rennes Metropole Library and Science area, the exhibition is suitable for everyone, but especially aimed at families.
On the opening of the exhibition, the University Rennes 2 will host the 22nd Conference of the International Arthurian Society, bringing together the world's greatest authorities on the legend from 15th to 20th July 2008.
