A Few Indications
The architectural and cultural traditions in Lithuania resulted in the inclusion of the old town of the Capital, Vilnius, in the Unesco world heritage as in 1994. The cultural and historical heritage has left its mark until this very day, as is indicated, for instance, by the “Baroque Route” an architectural route supported by the European Union.
The best-known figures include: the poet Oscar Vladislas Lubicz Milosz, the painter and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis, who incarnated the renewal of Lithuanian culture at the turn of the 20th century. Jonas Maciulis, better known under his pseudonym Maironis, is often considered as the founder of modern Lithuanian literature. Vilnius has been chosen as one of the European cultural Capitals for 2009.
Organisation of cultural policies
The Ministry of Culture is the public authority of the Lithuanian Republic responsible for designing and implementing the State’s cultural policies in the following fields: professional and amateur arts, theatre, music, cinema, museums, libraries, publishing, copyrights and related rights, and protection of the cultural heritage. The Ministry of Culture has the task of creating conditions favourable to the continuity of the national culture, to its development and to its dissemination, as well as to unrestricted access of the public to the various forms of cultural activities and expression, and cultivating and promoting the spiritual and the material values of the social classes and of the national communities in order to contribute to construction of a democratic society, one that is free and open.
