A Few indications
From the beauty of the cathedrals to the essential philosophers, from the greatest classical composers to grunge and industrial music of today, from the genius of Goethe to Brecht’s revolutionary theatre, German art is among Europe’s richest. One of the greatest German artists, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), was a poet, playwright, painter, scientist and philosopher. And, how could one fail to mention Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven and Richard Wagner? Germany has also given birth to some remarkable plastic artists, such as Peter Vischer, Albert Dürer and Balthasar Neumann. Germany has also done itself proud in the most recent kinds of artistic expression, such as avant-garde cinema, contemporary photography and contemporary painting- sculpture, of which artist Anselm Kiefer is a part.
Organisation of cultural policies
In the Federal Republic of Germany, the Bund (Federation), the Länder (federal States) and the communes together constitute a tri-partite system of public cultural policy. Political responsibility is held by the legislative organs of the Bund and of the Länder, by the autonomous assemblies of the districts, and by their cultural commissions. Technical implementation is up to the governmental authorities (Culture Ministries) or the district administrations (culture departments). Under the constitution, the public tasks and powers in connection with cultural policy are for the Länder. German cultural policy is organised on the basis of federal and decentralised mode. In addition to the Bund and the Länder, the district authorities, and the “Landkreise” subdivisions have also received cultural assignments within the general structure of public powers.
