Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the signing of an agreement between the governments of Belize and Guatemala on the settlement of their territorial dispute

The European Union welcomes the signing of a special agreement between the governments of Belize and Guatemala at the headquarters of the OAS in Washington. This is the first stage in a process designed to bring the longstanding territorial dispute between the two countries before the International Court of Justice. The agreement it is an important demonstration of both countries' commitment to resolving the issue.
The European Union wishes to encourage the governments of Belize and Guatemala to pursue that process in the same spirit of cooperation.
The European Union commends the long-term support for the process provided by the OAS and welcomes the opening of a Belize-Guatemala fund at the International Court of Justice to cover the legal costs, to which international donations may be made.
