On 9 and 10 December 2008, the European Conference on Research Infrastructures (ECRI 2008), will bring together all the European players concerned by this issue, particularly in the fields of nanoscience, safety, environment and life sciences.

Organised by the European Commission and the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, in conjunction with the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI), the conference will bring together a number of stakeholders. These will include directors of major research institutes, installation operators, representatives from European ministries or the world of science, the carriers of major future European projects. The projects presented will be dedicated to major, European research instruments such as telescopes, syncrothrons, laser platforms or systems using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).

The Commission and the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union wish this 5th conference to follow on from the conference in Hamburg (June 2007), by focusing on the impact of research infrastructures on the economy and society, recently identified in the Green Paper 2007 as a priority in the construction of the European Research Area.

The main topics addressed will be:
- the impact of research infrastructures on science and innovation;
- governance issues and economic challenges relating to the Lisbon objectives;
- expertise and environment-related problems;
- human resources, training and attracting high-level scientists.

At this conference, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) will release the first update of the ESFRI Roadmap, first published in 2006.

The ECRI 2008 conference will be held on 9 and 10 December at the Palais des Congrès, situated right next to the South wing of the Château de Versailles. The 11 December will be dedicated to visiting the research infrastructures of the Plateau de Saclay and the surrounding area.
