On 8 December, the Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) will hold a Council meeting aimed at overseeing the application and implementation of the stabilisation and association agreement signed in 2001.
This agreement, signed on 26 March 2001, constitutes the framework for EU-FYROM relations. It has four objectives: to provide a framework for political dialogue; support the FYROM's economic cooperation efforts; promote the creation of a free-trade area between the Community and the FYROM; and encourage regional cooperation.
This meeting will be an opportunity to review the reforms undertaken by Skopje in 2008 in the different areas covered by the agreement and assess the progress made with a view to the FYROM's future membership of the European Union, in relation to the progress reports published by the European Commission on 5 November last.
The Council meeting could, if appropriate, formulate recommendations on improving the implementation of the stabilisation and association agreement by both parties and consolidating and strengthening the FYROM's ties to the European Union.
