Could farming be a reservoir of jobs for the future? It seems so, given the statistics: with 2.5 million people employed in France and 17 million in Europe, farming is Europe's third biggest employer.
The French MSA (Mutualité Sociale Agricole / Agricultural Mutual Fund), which provides social protection in the agricultural world, is to hold a symposium on 8 December 2008 in Paris on the premises of the Economic and Social Council on "Working for high-quality agricultural jobs: from commitments at European level to responses on the ground".
Full employment, adaptability for workers and companies, integration into the labour market, working for older citizens, regional cohesion and attractiveness, will be the topics for debate among industry professionals, institutional stakeholders and elected representatives.
The objectives are as follows:
- to understand ongoing changes in agricultural employment;
- to identify requirements and share knowledge;
- to build partnerships for the development of long-term agricultural employment in France and Europe.
In holding this symposium, the MSA is seeking to demonstrate that social protection in agriculture constitutes a proactive contribution to the Lisbon Strategy in that it encourages the creation of more and better jobs.
The day's programme:
Morning:
- Address by Vladimir Špidla, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities.
