Held as part of the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the short film festival, "Screen Europe", took place in Hong Kong on 27 and 28 November 2008.
The Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macao and Eurochannel TV organised this festival with the support of the European representation in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Some 16 films were screened representing the 16 European countries officially present in Hong Kong and Macao.
This festival was an opportunity to further promote European diversity to film and television professionals, local press and prominent members of Hong Kong society. It was also a way to underline the importance of European culture in Hong Kong. European citizens account for approximately 50,000 of Hong Kong's population, making it the most important European community in an Asian city. More than 25% of foreign companies with their head offices in Hong Kong are European. Moreover, the EU is the third leading foreign investor in Hong Kong, far ahead of the US and Japan.
The programme for "Screen Europe", which was selected in partnership with Eurochannel TV, is intended to reflect contemporary European society, its culture and its complexity. The short films highlighted the know-how of a new generation of directors who stand out because of their singularity and talent and whose work takes into account a certain duality that is firmly rooted in European heritage: men and women who believe in a European identity. Beyond the emotion and humour, the short films gave rise to reflection and a more general discussion on the question of Europe.
This event also gave greater visibility to European cinema with several of these films having gained awards at international short film festivals like Clermont-Ferrand.
