The Joint Parliamentary Assembly (JPA), composed of an equal number of representatives from the European Union (MEPs) and from the ACP (appointed by the parliament of each ACP state), meets twice a year in a plenary session. The sessions are hosted alternately in an ACP or EU country (generally the country holding the six-month presidency).
After the Ljubljana meeting in March 2008 under the Slovenian presidency, the 16th JPA will be held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The French Presidency of the European Union will be represented by the Minister of State for Cooperation and the Francophonie Alain Joyandet.
The JPA, a consultative body, is tasked with promoting democratic processes through dialogue and consultation and to promote understanding between the peoples of the EU and those of the ACP states and to debate issues related to EC-ACP partnership and development.
