Declaration by the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on the resolution voted at the United Nations General Assembly for a death penalty moratorium (20 november)
- On: 21.11.2008
The Presidency of the Council of the European Union welcomes the adoption on 20 November of a resolution on a moratorium on the use of the death penalty by the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
This resolution confirms the success of the first resolution adopted last year by the General Assembly that called for all states to establish a moratorium on the use of the death penalty with a view to its abolition.
The conduct of the vote also confirms that the number of states that support a universal moratorium with a view to its abolition continues to grow.
The European Union, which has supported this initiative alongside countries from every continent, calls on all states to confirm this vote when it is reviewed at the UNGA plenary session in December.
