The French Centre for Farm Machinery, Rural Engineering, Water & Forests) is organising a european symposium this 20 and 21 November at the Paris Institute of Oceanography to explore the relationship between Water and Society through the notion of sustainable developments.

Water is now a high-stake issue in the context of global change. European public policies, through existing or future directives (European Framework Directive on Water, Residual & Urban Water Directive, Nitrates, Flooding and Pesticides, REACH, etc.) and environmental recommendations from world organisations and planet-wide treaties, now place the issue of water at the heart of key questions.

This european symposium, the subject of which compellingly cross-references European policies for environmental research with policies for operational stewardship, is a contribution to the European structuring of research in the area of water and related developments. It is being organised by the National Centre for Farm Macinhery, Rural Engineering, Water & Forests (Cemagraf), a reference research institute in the water industry in France, in partnership with recognised European research networks in the field it helped to create, such as PEER (Partnership for European Environmental Research) and EURAQUA (European Network of Freshwater Research Organisations). The event will mobilise world scientific organisations like AISH (International Association of Hydrology Sciences) and European trade organisations (European Water Association, Water Supply and Sanitation Technology Platform) concerned by the stewardship of water.

Water-related sciences, including Biophysical Sciences and Human and Social Sciences, lie at the core of the symposium where players will express their support potential for territorial sustainable development policies in a debate over resources and usage, conservation actions and ultimately water and territories.
