The French Presidency of the Council of the European Union is holding the annual contact points meeting on tackling the trafficking of stolen vehicles on 20 and 21 November.

Trafficking of stolen vehicles in the European Union causes damage estimated at 15 billion Euros a year. Fortunately, cooperation between national competent authorities has led to a fall in the number of stolen vehicles. Despite these results, it is necessary to continue tackling the trafficking of stolen vehicles as it is largely linked to organised crime.

New security features installed by car manufacturers (electronic gearboxes and keys, transponders) have also given rise to a much more violent form of organised crime (carjacking, homejacking, showroom-jacking) and deliquency is more cunning (false credit application, false bank transfer, misappropriation of hired vehicles, insurance fraud).

Several European instruments alert to vehicle theft in Member States and contribute to deterring against their re-registration: one example is the Schengen information system (SIS). The meeting on 20 and 21 November will particularly address the issues of the repatriation of stolen vehicles and inspection of imported vehicles.
