  • In: Paris, Centre Pompidou
The conference "New Perspectives for Intercultural Dialogue in Europe" is the high point of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. It should demonstrate the wealth of projects conducted and capitalise on relevant achievements.

European societies have become pluri-cultural and responses to the new resulting challenges are multiple, at European, national and local level.

The European Year of Intercultural Dialogue (2008) has aroused great interest in the 27 Member States of the European Union. It has allowed ideas to be examined in greater depth, and fosters a strong wave of initiatives and actions by the public authorities, professional networks and civil society in a number of areas: culture and communication, education and training, social cohesion, and relations with third-party countries.

The conference "New Perspectives for Intercultural Dialogue in Europe" is the high point of the year. It should demonstrate the wealth of projects conducted and capitalise on relevant achievements. It is also an opportunity for discussion and to put the lessons learned from the actions into in order to promote intercultural dialogue in the public policies of the European Union as well as in the policies of the Member States and territorial communities in the long term.

The projects and studies presented at the conference were selected by a jury of experts based on an invitation for proposals launched at the beginning of the year. University experts are also called on to explain the concepts and clarify the discussions in light of available scientific knowledge. This conference will be marked by a meeting between theory and practice, by the use of various forms of oral, visual and artistic expression, and debates with the conference participants.

A broad range of issues will be dealt with in the sessions: what are the strategic directions taken by the public actions? How do the media contribute to building a European citizenship, plural identities and encounters between cultures? Does the promotion of intercultural dialogue strengthen social cohesion? What are the objectives and teaching methods for education in intercultural dialogue? How does civil society mobilise itself in favour of intercultural dialogue? Does the promotion of intercultural dialogue encourage renewed creativity and cultural initiatives? What place does the promotion of intercultural dialogue occupy in Europe's relations with third-party countries?

This rich range of topics will be of interest to all those people - politicians, cultural and social professionals, researchers - involved in actions that promote intercultural dialogue..
