Climate change and the global economic situation are worsening the food crisis and revealing structural weaknesses. What role can the EU play?

The conference, jointly organised by the French Economic and Social Council and the European Economic and Social Committee will be based around two round tables on "Food and agricultural production: a global crisis" and "How to guarantee access to sufficient and good-quality food?". They will bring together international speakers representing development structures and actors from world food programmes and rural farming organisations. Michel Barnier, the French Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, will open the conference Rama Yade, the French Minister of State with responsibility for Human Rights, will conclude it.

The numerous aspects of the food challenge can become a difficult equation to resolve: on one hand, food needs are growing in terms of both quantity and quality, with the demographic impact, the development of food habits and appearence of new, health criteria; on the other, constraints on production, linked to energy, climate, water and environmental resources, are multiplying. In this context, which are the regulatory methods to implement and towards which global equilibrium models? What role can the EU play?
