The 2nd European Groundwater Conference is taking place in Paris from 13-15 November 2008.

This conference is organised by the French Ministry of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and Spatial Planning, in association with the European Commission and UNESCO. It is open to all interested parties, decision-makers, politicians, researchers, experts and public sector officials involved in groundwater management at local, national or European level.

The conference aims to facilitate dialogue on the progress of work in the different countries, the difficulties encountered and the areas for improvement in the future with regard to the implementation of the Water Framework Directive 2000/06/EC and the 2006/118/EC Groundwater Directive. These directives set a number of important deadlines for 2008 and 2009, in particular the identification of threshold values (environmental quality standards related to compliance with "good chemical status") and the approval of management plans and programmes of measures for reducing water pollution.
