Euro-Mediterranean Day on Conformity Assessment

The Barcelona Declaration, adopted in November 1995, aims to establish a global Euro-Mediterranean or "EUROMED" partnership, to make the Mediterranean a common area of peace, stability and prosperity by strengthening political dialogue and security through partnerships on economic and financial co-operation and social, cultural and humanitarian issues. Within the framework of the economic partnership, the creation of a free trade area is planned for 2010, a target that was reaffirmed at the Paris Summit on 13 July launching the "Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean". However, facilitating trade links cannot happen at the expense of product quality and the safety of citizens, and mainly implies the need for harmoning practices in the areas of standards, testing, conformity assessment and product accreditation.
These practices have recently been consolidated by the adoption of a regulation setting out the requirements for accreditation and market surveillance and the adoption of a decision on a common framework for the marketing of products. This new legislation supports actions designed to strengthen the partnership between the European Union and countries of the Mediterranean basin.
The day, which will bring together a number of experts from the Mediterranean basin and EU Member States, aims to take stock of the existing means for developing co-operation projects and the achievements in the field, as well as exchange experiences with a view to extending these co-operation projects to the whole area.
