The Etats Généraux Culturels Méditerranéens in Marseilles on 4 and 5 November is one of the events organised by the French EU Presidency as part of the Year of Euro-Mediterranean Intercultural Dialogue 2008. It will also be an opportunity to reaffirm, on the heels of the foreign ministers' meeting for the Union for the Mediterranean, the vital importance of culture in the Euro-Mediterranean partnership.
Following on from the cultural conferences of Paris 2006, Seville 2007 and Alexandria 2008, this Mediterranean cultural workshop will bring together 300 participants: civil society actors, cultural operators, and representatives from the European and Mediterranean institutions.
The aim of this event is to provide additional input with new ideas, proposals and projects for non-government organisations and to bring their conclusions to decision makers and public and private institutions.
The Etats Généraux will be based on eight workshops:
- Memory, History and Heritage
- Image, Audiovisual and Cinema
- Written Works, Translation and Libraries
- Artists, Artistic Creation, and Artistic and Cultural Mobility
- Religion and Societies
- Modernisation of Societies and Law
- Education and University
- Identity, Culture, Values and Visions of the Mediterranean.
Bernard Kouchner, Minister for Foreign and European Affairs will participate in the opening of the Etats Généraux Culturels Méditerranéens.
