In order to encourage trade and to fight against large-scale trafficking that is often linked to organised crime (cigarettes, alcohol, narcotic drugs, counterfeiting, etc.), bilateral agreements and mutual assistance agreements have been signed between the European Union and third countries that border the Merditerranean.
In order to boost these agreements, the European Commission, represented by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), in co-ordination with the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union, is organising a regional conference on customs co-operation on 3 and 4 November 2008 in Tangier.
This conference brings together EU Member States from the Mediterranean rim (Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, United Kingdom), third countries that are partners in the Barcelona Process (Albania, Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey), as well as certain Balkan countries (Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro).
Participants will be able to share their experiences and consider the best ways of exchanging information. Discussions will also be held on ways of carrying out joint customs operations in the context of mutual administrative assistance agreements.
The event is being organised near the new port of Tangier Med. It will be an opportunity to make port operators aware of new obligations imposed by the European Union in respect of safety and security, in the context of measures taken at international level to safeguard the flow of goods.
