Statement by the presidency of the Council of the European Union on the execution of two death row prisoners in Japan
- On: 28.10.2008
The Presidency of the Council of the European Union is deeply concerned by the Japanese authorities’ announcement of the hanging of two prisoners sentenced to death.
The Presidency reaffirms that it has long been opposed to the application of the death penalty, regardless of the circumstances, and has undertaken to abolish its use in the world by seeking to obtain a worldwide moratorium on executions, a first step towards realising this aim.
It invites Japan to re-establish the moratorium on the executions applied before 25 December 2006 and envisage the abolition of the death penalty.
