Keeping the public informed, young people in particular, is a key European priority at a time when scientific knowledge is being renewed with increasing rapidity.
The aim of the European Conference, launched and organised by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), is to establish a deeper dialogue between young people and European researchers on selected themes. Some 10 000 young people from all European Union countries will meet scientists representing a large array of disciplines, from the so-called hard sciences to human sciences.
At the request of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, a Flash Eurobarometer survey of 10 000 young people will be conducted ahead of the conference on their perception of science and research. Panels of young Europeans will be formed to work on the theme of the survey and on scientific topics featured in the meetings.
This will facilitate 10 workshops for reflection on themes ranging from the environment, food, nuclear energy and secularism.
A "common theme" workshop will be based on the reflections arising from the different panels on which the scientists at the conference will give their opinions. This workshop will be held over the whole day of 25 October.
Synthesis reports will be drafted by the representatives of the different panels in the form of recommendations and will be the subject of an official presentation at a later date.
