Nicolas Sarkozy, the President-in-office of the European Council, welcomed the announcement by the White House of a summit, to be held on 15 November 2008 in Washington, of the main countries and institutions concerned by the financial crisis.

The President of the European Council, who had launched the idea of this summit in his speech to the United Nations General Assembly on 23 September last, spoke in detail on this subject with President Bush on 18 October, in the company of the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso.

This first summit will be followed by several others in order to restructure the international financial system and ensure, through better regulation and more effective monitoring of all operators, that there is no repeat of the current crisis.

These summits should also address the global economic situation and the consequences of the crisis for developing countries.
