France is one of the founding members of the "International Forum for the Challenges of Peace Operations". Established in 2006, the forum is a discussion platform that brings together on an annual basis political decision makers, experts and academics tasked with providing new perspectives on the challenges faced by peacekeeping operations.
France, which has made boosting cooperation between the EU and the UN on crisis management and security issues one of its priorities under its EU Presidency, offered to host the first meeting of the forum from 20 to 22 October 2008 at the Ecole Militaire in Paris.
Organisation for the event will be jointly managed by the Ministries of Foreign and European Affairs and Defence, with the support of the Folke Bernadotte Academy, a Swedish institute that has led the Challenges for Peace Operations network since 1997 and the Center for International Studies and Research (CERI) - a Paris Institute of Political Science ("Sciences Po") research centre.
Challenges Forum 2008 will be an opportunity to:
- Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of current arrangements for preparing and managing peacekeeping operations;
- Identify best practices and propose recommendations to be applied during peacekeeping operations.
