The French ambassador to Mexico, Daniel Parfait, exercising the local presidency of the Council of the European Union, launched the strategic partnership with Mexico.
Europe thereby recognises the role played by Mexico as a leading player on the international stage. On 13 October, the French ambassador launched the EU-Mexico Strategic Partnership in the presence of Maria de Lourdes Aranda Bezaury, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Joao Aguiar Machado, Deputy Director-General for Latin America and Asia for the European Commission's External Relations Directorate, and Ambassador Mendel Goldstein, Head of the European Commission Delegation in Mexico.
The only Latin American member of the OECD, Mexico is now the only G5 (made up of the biggest emerging countries - China, India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico) nation to enjoy both a comprehensive agreement (including a free trade agreement) and a strategic partnership with the European Union. This strategic partnership with Mexico therefore becomes the framework to tackle together major global issues such as peace, collective security, regional crisis resolution along with environment and climate change, social cohesion, human rights, organised crime and migration.
The 8th EU-Mexico Joint Committee was held in parallel to the adoption of the conclusions establishing a strategic partnership between the EU and Mexico. This meeting was held in Mexico on 13 and 14 October. The Committee's work enabled an open exchange on international issues currently in the news and of mutual interest, namely the financial crisis, security, human rights, combating climate change, cooperation within the UN and combating drug trafficking.
