The conference aims to promote and deepen European cooperation to combat illegal employment practices, notably on the basis of proposals made recently by the European Commission..

On 13 and 14 October, the French Ministry of Labour, Labour Relations, the Family and Solidarity is holding a conference in Marseilles on combating illegal employment practices in relation to the development of the geographical mobility of workers and the transnational nature of employment relations. The conference aims to promote and deepen European cooperation to adapt the measures used to control these changing trends, such as direct employment and the posting of workers, and to encourage convergence between the actions of Member States in this area.

The increasing flow of workers within an expanded European Union, with the accession of 12 new members over the last three years, has encouraged Member States to take special care in ensuring that labour law and social security regulations are complied with, regarding both national legislation and Community law. The overall aim is to enable the internal market for services and the transnational geographical mobility of European workers to develop in line with legislative texts.

While French authorities, like those of other Member States, have undertaken first and foremost to fight social fraud on their own territory alone, their action in this area, although restricted to their national framework, is increasingly forced to take into account the transnational dimension of these practices.
