- from: 09.10.2008
- to: 10.10.2008
- In: Paris, Centre de conférences Pierre Mendès-France
In the European Union, some 235,000 people die every year from accidents or acts of violence. In France, 30,000 home and leisure accidents leave 12,000 people injured and 50 dead every day. In 2005, suicide led to more than 10,000 deaths and in 2007, road traffic accidents caused 4,615 deaths.
These statistics are a major cause for concern for all EU Member States. The European conference on 9 and 10 October will study what can be done to improve safety.
Gathering some 300 participants, this conference will be opened by Luc Chatel, Minister of State for Industry and Consumer Affairs, Government Spokesman, in the presence of Ms Meglena Kuneva, European Commissioner for Consumer Affairs. 80 experts will speak at plenary sessions or thematic workshops.
This event is organised by the French Consumer Safety Commission (Commission de la sécurité des consommateurs), in partnership with Eurosafe, the European Association for Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, and with the support of the European Commission.
Discussions will focus on all aspects of safety including health and safety of consumers, products and services, safety of children and elderly people, sports and leisure activities as well as road safety and safety in the workplace.
The issue of injury and violence prevention will be broached from the perspective of suicide and interpersonal, domestic and youth violence.
Presentations of more general themes will be given, focusing particularly on developing national prevention plans, improving epidemiological data and assessing the risks of hazardous services and products.
Everyday injuries call for a joint analysis by all prevention stakeholders and for concertation between all managers.
The discussions are intended for prevention professionals, public authorities, practitioners, academia and experts who, through sharing what they know, will help to launch a new European proactive prevention policy.
