On 7 October 2008, Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin, the French Minister for Health, Youth, Sport and the Voluntary Sector opened the exhibition “Cancer du sein, faites-vous dépister” at the European Parliament in Brussels in the presence of a number of key figures.
After the welcome address by the MEP, Elisabeth Morin-Chartier, the exhibition sponsor, the President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, emphasised his attachment to this cause and his satisfaction at the exhibition being held in the parliament. Professor Bonnier, author of the book which provided the photos, and Professor Maraninchi, President of the French National Cancer Institute and co-organiser of the event, both personally witnessed to the importance of breast-cancer screening. The European Commission for Health, Androulla Vassiliou, was also present to pay tribute to this initiative. Lastly, the Belgian Deputy Prime-Minister and the Minister for Health, Laurette Onkelinx, also attended the event and explained how she had drawn on the example of the French Cancer Plan to implement a similar plan in Belgium.
This exhibition, which showcases 500 square metres of photos on the facades and covers 100 square metres inside, is the largest exhibition ever held in the European Parliament. This is also the first European exhibition presenting the different cancer-screening systems in the member countries.
