Conference on the attractiveness of employment: the role of salaries and working conditions
- from: 08.10.2008
- to: 09.10.2008
- In: Paris
Raising employment rates is the key objective of the Lisbon Strategy for growth and employment. Reflections on and exchanges of best practices, carried out in the framework of the European Employment Strategy, have focused primarily on structural reforms - supply and demand - in the job market. The issue of the attractiveness of employment, in particular the aspect of remuneration (i.e. the price of work), has often been of secondary importance in the economic and social context.
The conference organised at the OECD Conference Centre on 8 and 9 October 2008 by the French Ministry for the Economy, Industry and Employment and the European Commission will provide an opportunity for the 250 participants from the 27 EU Member States to analyse and debate these issues. The event will bring together representatives of European institutions, national and European social partners, representatives from the world of economics, academic experts and national employment policymakers to discuss the following topics:
- career dynamics and the attractiveness of employment;
- wage formation in Europe and the role of public policies;
- conditions of employment as determining factors in the attractiveness of employment.
In light of experiments carried out in Europe, the plenary sessions and round tables will encourage exchanges of views on issues such as methods of training the most effective employees, the most suitable regulatory instruments and the consequences of breaks in career paths.
This conference will be opened by Laurent Wauquiez, the French Minister of State for Employment and Vladimir Špidla, the European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities. It will be closed by Christine Lagarde, the French Minister for the Economy, Industry and Employment and Petr Necas, the Czech Minister for Labour and Social Affairs.
