The French National Council for Sustainable Development is hosting the 16th annual conference of the European Environment and Sustainable Development Advisory Councils (EEAC). The internal meetings of the EEAC, from 8 to 11 October, will revolve around the plenary conference which will be held on Friday 10 October on the topic of "Sustaining Europe for a long way ahead."
The plenary conference on 10 October 2008 will provide an opportunity for all the participants from civil society to propose a long-term vision for Europe taking account of the risks and the challenges it faces today from a sustainable development perspective.
This conference aims to develop approaches for implementing long-term policies for sustainable development in Europe on the basis of eight areas identified by the EEAC Sustainable Development working group: governance, social justice, demography, markets, education, culture, diversity, and the European budget. These areas will be the subject of recommendations issued by the EEAC to the European Commission in the form of a resolution submitted for adoption by all the sustainable development councils. This resolution will attempt to define an institutional and policymaking framework that is better adapted to accommodate sustainable development in the long term at European level.
Indeed, the environmental and financial consequences of climate change, particularly in terms of natural risks, the loss of biodiversity and the reduction of food resources, will create increasingly disruptive threats to the health and well-being of both individuals and populations as a whole. These consequences are already visible, particularly in developing countries, as evidenced by the increase in poverty, the breakdown of food supply chains and forced migration. These factors are worsened by instability in financial markets and the growing rift between the rich and poor, as witnessed by riots against rising food prices. All these factors mean that long-term thinking must be central to current policymaking.
Created in 1993, the EEAC is a network of some 30 national sustainable development and environment councils from 15 different countries. They seek to promote independent and scientifically-based recommendations on environmental and sustainable development issues and to influence European policy in these fields. The French National Council for Sustainable Development (CNDD) has been an official member of this network since 1 January 2007.
