Statement by the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on Zimbabwe
- On: 03.10.2008
The Presidency of the Council of the European Union welcomes the announcement by President Kgalema Motlanthe, President-in-Office of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), of continued mediation on Zimbabwe. It welcomes the fact that former President Thabo Mbeki will continue to head the facilitation mission; his efforts since March 2007 led to the signing of a political agreement on 15 September.
The Presidency of the Council of the European Union hopes that the resumption of mediation will facilitate the continuation of dialogue and result in the formation, at the earliest opportunity, of a government of national unity, which is credible and reflects the aspirations expressed by the Zimbabwean people at the 29 March elections.
The implementation of the agreement of 15 September is now a matter of urgency. It must help provide the Zimbabwean people with long-awaited reforms regarding both the rule of law and improved living conditions.
