A meeting of forestry directors from the Member States is to be held in Nice from 1-3 October 2008.

Forests cover 44% of Europe's land area and their surface is expanding. They provide wood and renewable energy, combat climate change by storing CO2 and act as the main reservoir of biodiversity on land.

Following the meeting of the Standing Forestry Committee chaired by the European Commission, the forestry directors will examine the best coordination suitable for the implementation of the European Union Forest Action Plan, and will prepare for the European Forest Week.
In particular, they should closely examine the production of wood and the preservation of biodiversity, the prevention of forest fires and the conditions for imports of timber into the European Union.
An on-site visit will show participants a forest holding that uses cable-logging techniques in a mountain area, the preservation of biodiversity in the Mercantour national park and the management of natural risks.
