  • to: 30.09.2008
  • In: CNIT Paris La Défense
This conference will bring together more than 1,200 representatives from the worlds of research, industry and European institutions.

The main objective is to showcase the concrete implications of security research for citizens.

This conference represents a significant contribution to research and innovation and promotes dialogue between researchers, industry and users. It highlights the need to bring together the research and innovation offer on the one hand, and security needs and the market on the other. Discussion will focus on security research as an integral part of the construction of the European security area and the protection of citizens.

It will cover 4 main areas: security of citizens, protection of sensitive infrastructures, crisis management and border security. Security research is sustained by a public-private partnership linking the industry to the end-users, be they private or public. It has a multidisciplinary approach and takes into account the features of society shared by most EU Member States.

This conference is one of the actions undertaken under the European Security Research Programme (ESRP) and is funded as part of the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7). Participants will prepare the future calls for security research projects that qualify for ESRP financing.

Projects eligible for ESRP funding include, for example, automated systems for real-time screening of baggage at airport checkpoints, passenger identification using biometric tools (detection of hazardous or illegal products, smart CCTV targeting wanted persons etc.).
In the mid and long term, the ESRP acts as a European integration tool which will enable the EU to meet security challenges by developing a common approach. In the short term, it responds to the changes in the European security market where standardisation and industrial policy aspects are particularly significant.

During the event, a demonstration area and a trade fair located at the heart of the conference venue will provide an opportunity to discover the latest innovations in the field of security.

This conference is co-organised by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the Ministry of the Interior, and the Ministry of Defence with the support of the European Commission.
