Third European Think Tank Forum "The Shape of European Policy to 2020"
- from: 19.09.2008
- to: 20.09.2008
- In: Paris, International Conference Centre
In 2008-2009, the Council of the European Union will begin a discussion on an issue essential to the future of Europe: that of reviewing European policies and their financing after 2013. Beyond the crisis arising from the Irish rejection of the Lisbon Treaty, the challenges to be tackled are considerable: global warming, immigration, globalisation, energy, food security, etc. Will the European Union of 27 be able to build a common project which tackles these key challenges?
This forum will enable public and private sector policymakers, trade union representatives and academics to hold an open discussion on these topics and to construct future approaches. Their talks will focus particularly on the contributions submitted by thirteen think tanks which have worked on these issues for several months and drawn up specific recommendations for the French, Czech and Swedish trio presidency of the Council of the European Union. This was carried out in the framework of an innovative project, "Think Global-Act European", supported by Jean-Pierre Jouyet, the French Minister of State with responsibility for European Affairs, Alexandr Vondra, Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs, and Cecilia Malmström, Swedish Minister of European Affairs.
The forum will not be open to the public, but will be followed by a public session in the OECD International Conference Centre on Saturday 20 September, from 17:30 - 19:30 as part of the 'Paroles d'Européens!' programme. This session will be devoted to the topic 'What European Policy Outlines for 2020? The European Union's Budget Measured Against Its New Ambitions' and will be held in the presence of:
- Elisabeth Guigou, the French MP for Seine-Saint-Denis, Vice-President of the Foreign Affairs Commission;
- Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, former Italian finance minister, president of Our Europe;
- Jean Pisani-Ferry, professor at Paris-Dauphine University and manager of the Bruegel think tank;
- Vasco Cal, Bureau of European Policy Advisors at the European Commission;
- Denis Simonneau, Director of the office of Jean-Pierre Jouyet, the French Minister of State for European Affairs.
