Lifelong guidance plays a key role in education and training strategies at the European level. This is the theme of the conference held in Lyon on 17 - 18 September.
Xavier Darcos, French Minister for Education, and Odile Quintin, Director-General, DG Education and Culture, European Commission, gave the opening addresses.

This conference, which brings together 300 European experts, is part of the "Education and Training 2010" programme which seeks to give education and training a greater role in the deployment of the Lisbon Strategy whose stated aim is to make the European Union "the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010."

More precisely, this conference aims to identify the possible areas of convergence to improve the guidance of young people within European education systems and to measure progress made in the implementation of the Resolution Pertaining to Guidance adopted by the Council of the European Union and representatives of the Member States in 2004. This resolution stresses the need for a lifelong guidance policy at the national, sectoral, regional and local levels. Lifelong guidance services must be available at such times and in such forms to encourage all European citizens to develop their qualifications and competences throughout their lives.

It has been foreseen that once the conference work is completed, an action plan will be proposed in the form of a Resolution which may be adopted at the Education, Youth and Culture (EYC) Council on 20 and 21 November 2008.
