The GMES programme (Global Monitoring of Environment and Security), a joint initiative of the EU and the European Space Agency (ESA), is designed to provide Europe with a major information system on environment and security using data collected by spatial and terrestrial infrastructures.
In 2008, it is intended that the programme will move from its R&D phase into that of pre-operational demonstrations.
The forum's purpose is to demonstrate the capabilities of the initial services, to present their advantages to the users and to encourage companies, especially those downstream such as SMEs specialised in environmental information, to use these services to improve their competitiveness.
The forum is organised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the Ministry of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and Town and Country Planning (Regional Development), in association with the French Spatial Studies Centre (CNES) and the European Commission.
