The national parliaments of the 27 EU Member States and the European Parliament are meeting in Brussels on 10 and 11 September 2008 for a joint parliamentary meeting on the theme of "Europe: migration and integration". The French ministers Brice Hortefeux and Jean-Pierre Jouyet will address the meeting on behalf of the Council of the European Union.
The parliament of the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union traditionally organises one or more joint parliamentary meetings with the European Parliament, where MEPS and MPs from the 27 EU Member States work together on a given theme.
The European Parliament and both chambers of the French Parliament are therefore holding a meeting between both parliaments on the theme of "Europe: migration and integration" on 10 and 11 September in Brussels. It will be jointly chaired by Hans-Gert Pöttering, the President of the European Parliament, Christian Poncelet, the President of the French Senate, and Bernard Accoyer, the President of the French National Assembly. Manuel Antonio Dos Santos, the Vice-President of the European Parliament will represent Hans-Gert Pôttering on 10 September.
The MEPs and the delegates from the national parliaments are invited to work on the three following topics:
- Which European policy on legal immigration and which path to successful integration in the European Union?
- Which European policy on illegal immigration?
- Asylum in Europe: Which common policy?
Representatives from the Council of the European Union and the European Commission will attend the opening and closing debates. Brice Hortefeux, the French Minister of Immigration, Integration, National Identity and Mutually-Supportive Development will give an address at the opening debate on behalf of the Council of the European Union, while Jean-Pierre Jouyet, the French Minister of State for European Affairs, will represent the Council at the closing debate.
