Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the death of Magomed Yevloyev

The Presidency of the European Union has learned with dismay of the death in Nazran, Ingushetia, of Mr Magomed Yevloyev, owner of "ingushetiya.ru", the independent specialised website on the Caucasus.  It offers its condolences to his family and friends.

It calls upon the Russian authorities to shed all possible light on this affair.

The European Union reiterates the importance which it attaches to the freedom of the press and emphasises its concern over the fresh outbreak of violence in the Northern Caucasus.
 
The Candidate Countries Turkey and Croatia*, and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia align themselves with this declaration.
*    Croatia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
