The new school year in vocational agricultural colleges will feature a number of events highlighting the value of European cooperation activities in farm colleges and higher education establishments.
Michel Barnier, the French Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, made his traditional visit to mark the new school year on 2 September 2008 to the wine-growing school in Rouffach (Haut-Rhin, Alsace), an establishment with a reputation for active European cooperation, particularly with Germany and Austria. He took this opportunity to launch the first debate with young citizens, "Let's discuss it! Agriculture and Food Security in Europe". Mr Barnier also announced the creation of a European agricultural training competition for cooperation and innovation that will be won by the most innovative actions in French farm colleges working in partnership with their European counterparts in the areas of technology, teaching methods, modern languages and culture.
To place the start of the new school year under the banner of Europe, the agricultural training establishments will be urged to raise young people's awareness of the European Union by organising events with a focus on involvement of their European partners, such as language assistants.
