Declaration by the Presidency of the Council of the European Union following the passage of Hurricane Gustav

In the wake of the passage of Hurricane Gustav, which claimed a number of lives and caused very significant material damage, the Presidency of the Council of the European Union expresses its deep solidarity to the authorities and the populations of Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and the United States of America.
The Presidency offers its condolences to the families and friends of the victims and, in consultation with the European Commission and its Union partners, stands ready to give concrete expression to its solidarity with the populations concerned, should it be requested to.
